An awesome, mouth-filling wine made by Gerardo Méndez and his daughter Encarna from a single plot of ungrafted vines that are over 200 years old. Broad and potently flavoured with a beautiful pure lemon character, overtones of tingly white pepper and a breathtaking finish

Bright, red-fruit scented; lushly medium-bodied


Inurrieta Norte 2006 (Navarra) £16.95
This Cab-Merlot blend with 6 months in French oak oozes opulent black fruits, is elegant and intense


Navajas Crianza 2005/6/7 (Rioja) £19.75
Smooth dark plum and cherry fruits intermingle with gentle, fused chocolatey, vanilla scented oak (the result of some 18 months in new and used Virginia oak)


Blasón de San Juan Roble (Ribera del Duero) 2005/6 £20.50
Fragrant, strawberry-scented Tinto Fino with a pleasing, oaky edge and agreeably tingly finish. Medium intensity.


Tionio Crianza 2005 (Ribera del Duero) £25.50
This imposing, dark, violet-streaked cherry red continues to please: mature, spicy, with nicely integrated fruit, round tannins, good structure and backbone, and impressive length, it is a serious food wine


Navajas Tinto Reserva 2004 (Rioja) £24.95
Altogether more opulent than its younger Crianza brother, the 03 is lush, ripe and open; the follow-on 04 bigger, more concentrated and requiring more serious attention

Pago de Carrovejas Crianza (Ribera del Duero) 2005/6 £39.50
Dancier, and more approachable than its 04 predecessor - purple in colour, with toasty oak, spice box and mineral overtones, layers of black fruit, coffee and chocolate + ample, silky tannins: the imminent 06 is spikier and rather tight, so it will be decanted for you.
